Frunatic Food Therapy

Frunatic

Introduction To Frunatic

Yesterday, my daughter & I were invited to lunch at Frunatic. Having recently attended a talk on World Food Future For Women, I was quite excited. Perhaps there was something I could learn to help me make better food choices for myself & my family.

Prior to lunch, I did a bit of investigation online. I discovered that Frunatic serves only natural food, free of additives & preservatives. In addition, their food doesn’t contain dairy or gluten. In fact, for help with food therapy or choices, you can consult their team of nutritionists & naturopathic doctors. At Frunatic, these wellness professionals collaborate with the chef to create menus for various health needs. So the food is irrefutably healthy. The question is, is it yummy? I brought the fussiest eater I know, M5, to accompany me to find out.

Lunch Menu

Rosemary Lemon Tea

As lunch started, the owner, Jason, introduced the concept of Frunatic. He described how the meal is perfectly crafted and boosted with superfoods to improve absorption. As he animatedly described Frunatic’s therapeutic meals, a lady came around with a tray of rosemary lemon tea. This tea contained alkaline ionized water infused with rosemary & lemon zest. The vitamin-rich tea contained both anti-oxidant & anti-inflammatory properties, to boost circulation & improve mental alertness. Perfect! I couldn’t help but wonder if I should drink this at work instead of coffee.

Summer Orchard & Passion Fruit Coulis

I loved the first course which was a stone fruit salad with citrus. Not only did it look pretty, but the flavors were well-balanced too. Nutritionally, it was low in calories and high in insoluble fibre. This of course aids digestive processes, key for any healthy diet. I’m always a little conflicted when “detox” plans are trendy. I’m worried people starve themselves and conversely, mess up their metabolism. The term “detox” also vexes me because naturally, your body is meant to have detoxification processes. This is assuming your liver & kidneys work normally. So I’m relieved when there is actual food featured in the plan, like this stone fruit salad, rather than mere starvation & colonic cleansing.

The manager was also kind enough to serve us some snacks. He brought us a bowl of dehydrated chips made from vegetables including kale, lotus root & sweet potato.

Japanese Yam Noodle

The main course was M5’s favorite. She loved the mushroom broth which she drank lustily before devouring the broccoli. Presently, she attacked the noodles made from Japanese yam, edamame & brown rice. I was so tickled photographing her eating that I didn’t mind at all when she ate mine as well. I learnt that yam is used to treat disorders of the spleen, lungs, stomach & kidneys. Also, in consultation with a Traditional Chinese Medicine physician, the dish had been enhanced to remove “damp heat”. I thought immediately of my mother-in-law, a pioneer in obstetrics who also believes in TCM. Perhaps I should bring her here for a meal. I think she might get along quite well with the chef.

We ended the meal with a berry smoothie & some cake. Although the cake was raw and didn’t contain dairy products, it tasted dense and flavorful. In fact, M5 had three portions, a true show of approval.

Live Happily Ever After

As a surprise, Frunatic presented another special cake to our friend, Evelyn, in celebration of her birthday. This cake, topped with beautiful roses, was a splendid sight. More importantly, the joy on Evelyn’s face was priceless. Many of the ladies were so impressed that they immediately made inquiries to order their own cakes. While M5 & I were too full to have another bite, we stayed on to spend time with our friends. After all, good food in good company must surely lead to good health!

In a city where food options are plentiful, we need to make the conscious choice about what goes into our bodies. Food therapy is key in preventive medicine. Fortunately, at Frunatic, healthy meals & yummy food do exist in intersecting venn diagrams. With good food, the idea is not just to live longer, but happily ever after.
